Safety Tips for Motorcycle Riders in Need of Roadside Assistance

Let’s be realistic for a brief moment–life is unexpected and tends to be unpredictable. This is nowhere more apparent when we’re traveling by vehicle. Accidents and breakdowns happen, and they happen when they’re least expected. If you’re a motorcycle rider, the prospect of having one of these situations occur is an unnerving one. If you’re in a position where you have to call roadside assistance, you should keep a few things in mind. And we’re going to go over them here.

Prepare Yourself Before Heading Out

While the road ahead is unpredictable, that’s no reason not to be prepared for the unexpected. If you’re a motorcycle rider, you’re at the mercy of the weather. Be sure to pack along some extra clothes like rain gear, should the elements decide to give you a harder time than usual. Depending on the wait, you’ll want to stay dry if there’s rainfall.

Stay Calm & Pull Over

It’s completely understandable why people feel unnerved after an accident or a breakdown. One of the most important things to remember is not to panic. Stay on the right shoulder when you pull over. If it’s possible, take the nearest off-ramp and maneuver yourself off the highway to a secure location such as a service station before calling for help.

Move You and Your Bike to a Safe Spot

Getting off the road is imperative when you’re in need of roadside assistance. One of the most important factors to take under consideration is visibility. While it’s important that you and your bike get off the road to safety, it’s important that you maintain a level of visibility to the passing vehicles on the road. A motorcycle doesn’t have as much visibility as a car or truck, and if you’re on a street with fast traffic, you’re immediately at risk. Find a safe spot.

Be Aware of Darkness

Depending on what time of the day it is, darkness can impede other vehicles’ ability to see you. If you have a light source that can be used as a safety beacon, please use it while you’re waiting for assistance. Motorcycles are already at lower visibility when on the road, and this is tripled at night. Be safe, and remember that no bike is worth putting your own life at risk over.
